Tuakana Teina Powhiri
A couple of weeks ago. We performed an amazing powhiri for our tuakana teina (buddy class - room 23. First the girls and boys lined up while the kia karanga Raiah, Sylvia, Avani, Marzina and Gia stood in front to karanga our visitors. Our fierce Kai Wero (warrior) Abhinav challenged room 23 to check that they had come in peace. One of the visitors presented a koha (gift) to show that they were friendly. Abby then gave them a handmade flax puti puti made by our lovely teacher Mrs Brown. Slowly the kai karanga moved backwards leading our guests into our classroom. Once everyone was inside. I stood up to welcome them by saying our school pepeha. After that we sang the waiata 'Rona' using wonderful actions that we had been learning. Our tuakana teina responded by saying their pepeha. After that Room 23 sang the waiata Tutira Mai showing tremendous pride. It was awesome! Generously, they presented us with even more kohas. That was so nice of them!
Our tuakana teina powhiri was a very special time we will always remember. We learned a lot about Maori traditions, protocols, respect, how to be a good host and Manaakitanga.
